I think it's a general 'don't let them grow too big' thing. At least the trees were trimmed by blokes with proper tree saws and still look like trees - I hate the ones that have been hacked back with chain saws to the trunk-with-a-couple-of-limbs stage.
As someone with trees that size about that distance from all my windows, I'm always jolly glad when their owners/the council get the tree surgeons in... Saves me about 6 hours of lightbulb-time a day in the summer!
